MEDICINAL USES OF PIRANDAI

PIRANDAI


Pirandai is a perennial plant known as adamant creeper, devil’s backbone and veldt grape is a creeper from grape family with botanical name cissus quadrangularis.
It is in use for its medicinal properties since antiquity.

Different varieties of this creeper plant are found in various regions with synonymous names. Of the many varieties, two of them, Cissus Quadrangularis and Vitis Quadrangularis are predominantly used for their culinary and medicinal benefits.

Nutrition information

Pirandai is rich in vitamin C and vitamin E. In 100 gm. of pirandai, 327 mg vitamin-C and 696 mg. vitamin E are present. It is an anti-oxidant containing flavonoids and quercetin.
This herb has been in use in traditional medicines, particularly in Ayurveda system for a long time. However modern research has not still come out with details regarding the nutrient contents and health benefits of the herb.

Significant benefits derived from Pirandai

Relieve sprains

Pirandai paste is made by grinding the pieces of the herb with tamarind, turmeric and salt and boiled. The paste is then applied externally to cure sprains and minor bone injuries or fractures. The juice extracted from the herb is also mixed with the same ingredients and boiled and then applied for the same cure.

Stomach disorders

Chutney (Type of gravy) made from Pirandai (as prepared by households in South India) is consumed twice a week to remove gastritis and intestinal disorders. It enhances appetite by curing stomach related disorders. Pirandai chutney is made by pan frying with sesame oil the pieces of the herb with urad dhal and red chilies and then grinding with salt and asafetida for taste.

Reduce bad cholesterol

Pirandai is a blood purifier. Consumption of the cooked herb regularly keeps the cholesterol ratio at the desired level by reducing the bad cholesterol. Thus it prevents heart diseases.

Other benefits

Juice prepared from raw herb is recommended for consumption to cure bleeding nose, respiratory problems and asthma. It is also used to stop pus in the ears.
Complications arising out of menstrual cramps and irregular periods are cured by consumption of different forms of Pirandai preparations.
Pieces of the herb fried in ghee is consumed to cure fistula and bleeding piles. It also cures disorders due to phlegm.
Consumption of the herb in various cooked forms, with added ingredients for taste, removes poison due to spider bite, eruptions, eczema and cutaneous diseases.
